Our Research

The School of Business, Economics and Public Policy has an active research culture and a strong record of postgraduate completions, scholarly publications, and competitive research grants. Many of the projects undertaken in the School are in collaboration with leading researchers both nationally and internationally.

Research Strengths

The research strengths of the School lie in the following areas:

Economics: Applied microeconomics and public economics; Agricultural and resource economics, Economic history; and Development economics

Business: International marketing and branding; Accounting legislation, Leadership, Small business management and entrepreneurship; and Gender and rural governance.

Public Policy: Administrative studies; Policy studies; Higher education management and governance

Research Centres

The school is also home to a number of research centres which represent groupings of expertise around particular research strengths.

The Centre for Business Research provides training and consultancy in relation to small and medium sized enterprises, the economic environment, management, finance governance and efficiency and productivity analysis; learning and training and Indigenous and women’s issues.

The Centre for Higher Education Management and Policy (CHEMP) is a multi-disciplinary research centre that generates leading edge research on higher education and research policy that is distinctly comparative in nature.

The Centre for Local Government provides an umbrella for support, service, education and leadership to all sectors of local government in Australia through education, professional development, consultancy and research.

Publications

The School has an impressive track record when it comes to the dissemination of research outcomes. In line with UNEs long academic tradition our staff publish in national and international refereed journals. In addition, many of the fruits of our research feature as books, book chapters, and commissioned reports.

Postgraduate Research

Our research masters and PhD students have explored and are currently exploring a wide variety of topics in the areas of Economics, Business and Public Policy.
 
Economics:
Staff possess a wide range of research interests in Economics, applied Econometrics and Economic History. Postgraduate students wishing to pursue research in any of these broad areas should consult the detailed curriculum vitae of staff members on this website.

Business: examples include marketing of organic foods, intuitive decision making in management, the role of Australian Vice-Chancellors, transformational leadership behaviours, complexities in implementing a native vegetation policy, adoption of innovations in agriculture, gender differences in performance among small business owners, performance of SMEs in Thailand, career development in the accounting profession, cross-cultural implications of innovation adoption, integration of the Malaysian equity market.

Public Policy: Given the expertise and interests of our staff, we offer postgraduate opportunities for research on School Leadership and Higher EducationManagement and Policy, both in the Australian and comparative perspective.
