Communication

The areas covered in Communication Studies include film, television, radio, print media, new media, popular culture, gender studies and some professional writing. The range of offerings provides an effective balance between theory/analysis units and units relevant to media industries and professions.

There is a comprehensive range of Communication Studies units available to Internal and External students. This provides valuable flexibility to students, who can vary their mode of study to suit their employment and individual needs.


Undergraduate Communication Studies

The Bachelor of Communication Studies
The Bachelor of Communication Studies (three years full time) at UNE offers a balance of academic and vocational education. It includes two separate programs. The general program in Communication Studies explores print, audio, audiovisual and electronic media and allows students to broaden their knowledge of communication practices in various social contexts. The named program in Writing allows students to specialize in academic, professional, organizational, creative and media-based genres.

Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Communication Studies)
In addition to the Bachelor of Communication Studies described above, students may take Communication Studies as a major within a Bachelor of Arts.

Honours in Communication Studies

Honours is taken after completing a Bachelor degree with results that meet admission criteria. It can be taken as a one year full-time or two year part-time course, either internally or externally.

Postgraduate Communication Studies

There are many opportunities for postgraduate study in the School of English, Communication and Theatre including the Master of Arts by Coursework, Master of Arts by Dissertation and the Doctor of Philosophy, as well as a number of Graduate Certificates. Employment and Further Study Opportunities

Communication Studies graduates work in a wide range of media and information industries. They will find employment opportunities in areas such as film, television, advertising, print media, multimedia, publishing and editing, arts and entertainment management, community arts, education, the public service and business, advertising and public relations.
