The nursing profession has a key role to play in the health of all Australians. Nurses are employed in a wide variety of health-related situations including occupational health and safety, community nursing, mental health, general medical and surgical nursing and a large number of speciality settings.

The aim is to prepare Enrolled Nurses as beginning competent nursing clinicians who will be eligible for registration with the NSW Nurses' Registration Board. Graduates will have experienced a tertiary education preparing them for lifelong education and providing a sound foundation for postgraduate work in the discipline of nursing.

The four-year off-campus program of study is supplemented with on-campus residential schools and on-site clinical experience provided by the School of Health Clinical Schools and their associated Health Services partners.

Intensive Schools Intensive mandatory schools may be a requirement of some of the units in this course. See Unit Catalogue for specific requirements.
Entry Requirements

A candidate must be an Enrolled Nurse, and hold the Advanced Certificate in Nursing (Enrolled Nurse) or equivalent, and have at least one year's experience as an Enrolled Nurse.

Course Rules

1. Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall:
(a) be an enrolled nurse; and
(b) hold the Advanced Certificate in Nursing (Enrolled Nurse) or equivalent; and
(c) have had at least one years’ experience as an enrolled nurse.

2. Course Requirements
2.1. To qualify for the award, a candidate shall pass 96 points as specified in Rules 2.2. and 5.
2.2. The course shall comprise all units in Group 1.

3. Period of Candidature
The maximum period of candidature shall be:
(a) three years as a full-time candidate;
(b) six years as a part-time candidate.

4. Progress and Conduct
Refer to the University General Rule on Academic Progress.

5. Units Offered
All units listed below for this award have a value of six credit points except where indicated after a colon.

Career Opportunities

Nurse
Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

The Bachelor of Nursing Studies has a large component of clinical praxis (Practical Experience related to theory).

20 weeks of Practical Experience is undertaken as follows: Medical/Surgical (8 weeks); Maternal and Infant (one week); Paediatrics (one week); Mental Health (3 weeks); Developmental Disabilities (one week); Aged/Palliative Care (2 weeks); Community Placement (2 weeks); and Clinical Elective (2 weeks).

It is designed for students to integrate their knowledge and experience and to develop the level of skills required of a registered nurse. Praxis must be undertaken in NSW and outside a candidate's place of employment.
