Description

This program will provide the tools for staff at UNE to become better leaders in a workplace which employs skilled, astute and highly educated staff. Current leadership theory and practice utilised in the most successful enterprises will be introduced by experienced staff from across UNE. Contemporary issues and challenges will be discussed for improved leadership applications in both formal and informal settings throughout UNE. A key outcome for this program is to provide participants with the time and opportunity for professional development through self-reflection and discussion.

The leadership program is a structured series of 3 full-day and 2 half-day workshops and work-based activities that are aligned with UNE’s strategic directions.

Benefits

This program will enable participants to grapple with current leadership issues and challenges relevant to both the formal and informal leadership roles of staff in contemporary Australian universities. The program also provides a great opportunity to meet and network with staff from across the University.

  • Achieving Strategic Goals through Operations Management and Project Management
  • Ethics and Leadership
  • Negotiation Skills
  • The Organisational Context within Universities
  • Assessment

  • 2 written/analytical assignments
  • A Reflective Practice Journal exploring the personal implications of the program

    Objectives

    The objectives of the UNE Staff Leadership Program are consistent with the challenges presented by the Strategic Plan and are to:

  • understand the distinction between leadership and management, and the role and importance of both, in University development
  • understand how organisational dynamics and development shape the achievement of strategic goals/objectives
  • understand the principles of leading, implementing and managing change in a University setting
  • identify and implement the principles of strategic thinking and planning, as well as basic skills in developing a strategic plan
  • understand some of the recognized management approaches required to achieve strategic outcomes and desired operational performance
  • understand, identify and reframe workplace conflicts, and to use a variety of skills in resolving conflict through interpersonal mediation and counselling
  • understand interpersonal differences, team building processes and organisational development in achieving performance
  • demonstrate effective communication and negotiation skills as well as knowledge/skills in facilitating group decision-making
  • To develop the skills and knowledge to create and support a culture of academic and administrative excellence and continuous learning in the workplace
  • To develop the skills and knowledge to practise effective communication and develop effective communication strategies in the workplace
  • To understand and acknowledge one’s own style as a leader and have developed personal strategies for the learning and enhancement of skills
