Introduction

Oorala’s support services include a Student Centre where students can access computers and study facilities. The Student Centre is also a place where students can meet with their tutors and other students.The Oorala Centre’s Student Support Officer can assist with making ABSTUDY and UNE course enquires and liaise with faculties in regard to students’ educational programs. Oorala also provides support and advice to students who are seeking admission to UNE. You can contact the Student Support Officer on (02) 6773 5176, or email tbatters@une.edu.au.

Abstudy

You will need to register with ABSTUDY each year to be eligible for financial assistance for your studies. Please see your local Centrelink office for the appropriate forms. As an Abstudy recipient you may be eligible for financial assistance to attend Residential schools, Field study and/or Practicums.

Accomodation

There is college accommodation available at UNE for both internal and external students.
For Residential School accommodation contact the 'External Students Accommodation Office' on (02) 6773 3370 or fax (02) 6773 3535.




ITAS (Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme)

The Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS), program is funded by the Department of Education, Science and Training and administered by the Oorala Centre.
If you are enroled at UNE during the academic year you are entitled to:

Students can nominate a tutor or the ITAS Coordinator will find you a tutor.

Graduation

There are two Graduation Ceremonies held each year in March/April and October.

As part of your academic dress you can request to wear an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander graduation sash. Please contact the Oorala Centre's Administrative Assistant on (02) 6773 3034.

ABSTUDY travel assistance for graduates

As an ABSTUDY recipient you may be eligible for travel assistance to attend your graduation ceremony. Please contact your local Centelink Office or the Abstudy Student Assistance on 13 23 17.




Residential Schools

If you would like to apply for ABSTUDY assistance to attend residential schools, field trip or practicum you will need to contact the Oorala Centre's Student Support Officer eight (8) weeks prior to the activity's commencement date.

Important Steps:

  1. Student will need to contact the Student Support Officer and request assistance for residential schools, field studies or practicum and provide following details:

    Name; Student number; Unit of study; Course coordinator and Dates of activity.

  2. Oorala’s Student Support Officer will generate an ABSTUDY Submission for Away From Base Activity Funding Form O to be completed by the unit/course coordinator.

  3. Unit/Course coordinator return the completed Form O to the Oorala Centre. The Student Support Officer checks the form and contacts student for further details.

  4. The completed Form O is mailed/faxed to the ABSTUDY.

  5. You will receive a confirmation letter notifying you that the application Form O was sent to the ABSTUDY.

  6. Students will need to check with ABSTUDY two (2) weeks after receiving the confirmation letter from the Oorala Centre and arrange accommodation/travel.

  7. For Residential School accommodation you will need to register with the External Students Accommodation Office on (02) 6773 3370.

  8. To claim reimbursements for travel and accommodation associated with your residential school, field studies or practicum you will need to provide ABSTUDY with receipts for travel costs; e.g. fuel, accommodation etc. Accommodation receipts are proof for ABSTUDY that you have attended the activity.
