The University of New England has an established reputation for teaching Asian languages and their associated literatures and cultures as well as European languages and cultures. Language teaching in all disciplines is from ab initio level and in both on campus and distance education modes. The School of Arts wishes to fill a fixed-term position of Lecturer in Chinese to start as soon as possible until 31 July 2010. The successful applicant will teach undergraduate language proficiency units in Mandarin and units on contemporary Chinese culture, contribute to the discipline’s research profile, and may be required to supervise honours and higher degree research students. The successful applicant will have native or near-native competency in Chinese (Putonghua) and English, a higher degree in a relevant area of Chinese Studies, experience within or capacity to work in the Australian university system, and proven experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Good communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as part of a small team are essential. Experience in distance education and expertise in online teaching including computer assisted language learning competency, are desirable. The appointee will be expected to contribute actively to curriculum development, undertake standard administrative duties, participate in inter-institutional programs and actively engage in promotion and advocacy for Chinese Studies at UNE.
