University of New England Strategic Doctoral Scholarships

Strategic Doctoral Scholarships will be awarded in areas of existing or emerging research strength at UNE to candidates with the highest potential to succeed as higher degree research students.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for a Strategic Doctoral Scholarship, a student must:

  1. have completed a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours, or be regarded by UNE as having an equivalent level of attainment, and
    be undertaking a research Doctoral degree; and
  2. be enrolled as a full-time, internal student; and
  3. not hold a Research Doctorate degree or an equivalent research qualification; and
  4. must not previously have held an Australian Government-funded postgraduate research scholarship (excluding an Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship or its predecessor, International Postgraduate Research Scholarship), unless it was terminated within six months of the scholarship’s payments commencing; and
  5. must not be receiving an equivalent award, scholarship or salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the APA stipend rate to undertake the HDR. Income earned from sources unrelated to the course of study is not subject to the 75% rule.

If a student does not hold a Bachelor degree with First Class Honours, then UNE may determine that the student has demonstrated an equivalent level of academic attainment. In determining an equivalent level of academic attainment, UNE may consider previous study, relevant work experience, research publications, referees’ reports and other research experience.

In addition, candidates must:

  1. hold Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency;
  2. propose a research topic which fits with the nominated strategic research areas;
  3. present an application of academic merit; and
  4. have a high likelihood of successful and timely completiononly those who demonstrate the highest potential to succeed and complete their doctoral studies successfully within 3 years full-time will be considered for a scholarship.

Assessment Criteria
Evaluations of applicants will be evidence-based. The likelihood of an application being successful will be based on the following criteria:

  • Academic Excellence;
  • Research performance;
  • Strength of referees’ support;
  • Availability and continuity of expert, experienced, successful supervisory team;
  • Demonstrated ability of the candidate to produce timely outcomes; and
  • Demonstrated high level analytical skills and English expression.

Research Topic and Targeted Areas
The proposed research topic is to align with any of the University’s identified strategic research areas. A description of how the topic contributes to or aligns with that area is to be provided.

Benefits:
The annual value of a Strategic Doctoral Scholarship stipend is $30,000.
A number of allowances are also provided under the scholarship.

Duration
The Scholarship is available for a maximum of three years only.
