Introduction
The School of Arts offers a range of exciting courses in European and Asian Cultures which is a fascinating and challenging area of study. Alongside works written in the English tradition, you will have the opportunity to study major novels, plays and films from Asian (Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese) and European (French, German, Italian) cultures. You will explore the interrelationship between the texts and the historical and cultural contexts within which they were created as well as between the various texts themselves. European and Asian Cultures can be studied in combination with a range of subjects, being a perfect complement for units in Communications, English, History, Languages, Music, and Theatre Studies. They can contribute to the award of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Languages, Bachelor of Languages and International Studies and the Advanced Diploma in Modern Languages.
Why Study European and Asian Cultures at UNE?
In the past courses in European and Asian cultures have been very popular with students of languages as they provided them with an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of the cultural context of the specific language they were studying. Recently these courses have become available to students of English, Communications and Theatre Studies, whom they can help to cultivate advanced communication and analytical skills whilst enhancing their general cultural literacy.
At UNE you can study courses in European and Asian Cultures either full-time or part-time, in either internal mode, thus benefiting from face-to-face lectures and tutorials, or externally, which means that you can complete your degree living almost anywhere in the world, arranging your study schedule around your other commitments and activities. Having completed an undergraduate degree you can then enroll in an Honours program which is offered both internally and externally, in either part-time or full-time mode, and which combines coursework with a 15000 words dissertation.
Another unique feature of the stream as it is offered by UNE is the combination of novels, films and plays from both Asian and European cultures as prescribed texts. Such a broad cross-cultural approach to teaching is highly appropriate in the Australian context, given Australia’s historical, cultural and economic links with both Europe and Asia.
