Study German at UNE

Introduction

German is one of the most important languages spoken in the world. It is one of the official languages of the European Union, and has a long reputation as a language of culture (literature, music, philosophy and theology), the sciences (chemistry, physics and medicine) and technology. The most recent data from the European Union reveals that 100 million people speak German in Europe as their first language and a further 40 million in countries around the world speak German as their second language. German speakers have also made a significant contribution to modern Australia.

Why Study German at UNE?

UNE-German is the most experienced department in Australia offering German on an external (by distance education) and has been taught on campus since 1938. External and internal students follow the same courses, submit the same assignments and sit the same examinations. Teaching and administrative staff are highly experienced in dealing with both categories of student, and we welcome all enquiries.

German units provide for entry at two levels: students with little or no prior knowledge commence their studies with GRMN 101 and GRMN 102, while students with HSC German or equivalent commence with GRMN 201 and GRMN 202. Native speakers may apply for special permission to commence their studies with GRMN 301 and GRMN 302. If you are in doubt as to which entry level is most appropriate for you, you should contact the convener for advice.

Students enrolled in GRMN 201 and GRMN 202 may concurrently or in subsequent years enrol in GRMN 303 and GRMN 304 (German Literature & Society A and B). Similarly, students doing GRMN 301/302 and GRMN 307/308 may also enrol concurrently or in subsequent years in GRMN 305 (Love, Betrayal and Politics) and GRMN 306 (Societies in Transition).

Postgraduate studies are available in a number of fields for Honours, MA, MA Hons and PhD candidates.

You can include a semester or two in Germany or Austria as part of your degree.
In addition to this, the new degree of Bachelor of Languages and International Business, gives the students the opportunity to complete not just a semester long exchange at one of our partner universities, but also the chance of a lifetime - a three-month internship working for a German or Austrian company.

Careers

Any language coupled with another skill can lead to an in-depth and interesting career.  A degree with a major in political science and German, for instance would suit a student interested in working for the Dept of Foreign Affairs and Trade, UNO or International Relations.  Coupled with science, proficiency in German will open up job opportunities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland which a non-German speaker would not be able to apply for.  Likewise IT and German could provide job-seekers with opportunity to enter the lucrative IT industry in Germany, and Law would open up opportunities with the EU or aid agencies.  In addition to this, teaching is a rewarding career which combines well with a foreign language.
