I studied a Master of Science in Agriculture to broaden my knowledge in sheep and wool production. I chose UNE because my employer knows it is a leading world centre for wool science education and research.

Introduction

On this page you will find information about studying wool science at UNE. UNE is the leading centre for the study of wool science in Australia with the most comprehensive range of sheep and wool units. Only students enrolled in UNE’s B. Livestock Science can study as many of these units as they wish in their course. The units cover all aspects of the wool supply chain from farm to fabric. We pride ourselves in our use of modern teaching technology and the quality of our research. This site has been designed to provide information about the subject and its teaching and research activities.

Why study Wool Science at UNE?

UNE is in the heart of premium fine wool country and there is ready access to all the resources needed for teaching and research in sheep and wool science, including University rural properties and animal houses. Much of this research is conducted with UNE, CSIRO Livestock Industries and NSW DPI co-supervisors in the economics, genetics, biochemistry, nutrition, wool metrology and health areas.

Careers

A survey conducted by an independent, international survey company, TNS, on behalf of the Sheep CRC, across 100 organisations in the Australian livestock industry (focused on the sheep and wool industry) estimated that 4000 degree graduates were needed within the next 5 years by industry. UNE was found to have the most identifiable degree programs suitable for these employers.

Graduates from UNE courses can expect employment in advisory, regulatory and research positions in all agricultural fields in both the private and public sectors, particularly in breeding, management and consultancy for the livestock industries and agribusiness. Potential careers range from extensive rangeland production to high input grazing and feedlotting. The Australian Wool Testing Authority is always interested in graduates who have studied wool metrology.
