Study Writing at UNE

Introduction

The Writing Major (BA) provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the many scholarly and practical aspects of writing in contemporary Australian society.  The range and variety of units offered in this major are suitable for students with interests in some or all areas of writing, and upon completion, will equip students for further academic study in cognate areas or experience in the workplace.

Why Study Writing at UNE?

At UNE, students with an interest in writing can take the Writing Major in either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Communication Studies, and, at the postgraduate level, undertake a Graduate Certificate in Writing and a Masters of Arts in Writing (by course work).  The programs in writing offered by the School of Arts introduce students to the broad modes of writing – creative, professional, commercial; they also provide a comprehensive introduction to the various theoretical and practical aspects relating to the diverse range of writing styles, forms and practices occurring in these modes.  The writing program offers a diverse range of integrated units of study – from units focusing on elements of composition, the role of research, and approaches to publishing and editing, to those units concerned with rhetoric, genre, critical and creative writing.  Students completing the writing program at UNE will, therefore, have acquired and improved their skills in all the relevant areas of writing and so be well equipped for employment in a creative, commerical or professional capacity.
